The primary purpose of this course is to familiarize VPK instructors with strategies and techniques to address the age-appropriate progress of prekindergarten students in developing emergent literacy skills, including oral communication, knowledge of print and letters, phonemic and phonological awareness, and vocabulary and comprehension development.

A VPK instructor whose highest educational credential is a Child Development Associate or Child Development Associate Equivalent, and who has not previously completed training in early literacy and language development as approved by Department of Children and Families (DCF), or as part of the educational coursework for attaining a Bachelor’s or Associate’s degree, is required to take this course. VPK providers who have taken the DCF approved coursework are encouraged to complete the DOE Emergent Literacy course as part of their required annual in-service training.
